Bunker Nature Preserve

The Bunker Nature Preserve consists of 130 acres of forest, native prairie, wetland and grassland. The wetlands are quite extensive and include emergent/open water, shrub and forested wetlands. Vernal ponds critical for amphibian species are found on the property.

What makes this preserve special?

• Over 20 species of wildflowers are present, including Wild Bergamot, Purple Coneflower, Lupine, and Foxglove Beardtongue.

• 177 species of birds have been observed on the property including American White Pelican, Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Hooded Merganser and Ring-necked Duck.

• There is a network of ponds and floodplains that attract numerous species of waterfowl and shorebirds.

Preserve Guidelines


Stay on trails.
This helps prevent erosion problems and protects delicate wildflowers and other plants from being trampled.

Take your trash with you when you leave.
As a non-profit with an extremely small staff, we are not able to maintain trash cans at our preserves.

Respect wildlife.
Please keep dogs on 6-foot long leashes at all times and do not allow them to chase wildlife. Even chipmunks deserve a break!

  • No motorized vehicles

  • No bikes or horses due to erosion issues

  • No camping or fires

  • No fireworks

  • No dumping

  • Do not collect, remove, or destroy plants

  • Do not bring alcohol or glass containers into the preserve

  • Yes, Bunker Natural Area is open year round from dawn to dusk.

  • Yes, leashed pets are allowed in the natural area on the trails. Please pick up any waste to protect the natural area and to be courteous to visitors.

  • No, hunting is not allowed at this time as a management tool on Bunker Nature Preserve.
